My middle name - Lovelace - means a lot to me. It's my grandmother's maiden name, and it goes back all the way to the times of Medieval England. While studying my family line a year or two ago, I found a coat of arms that matched the Lovelace family name. Something struck me about the coat of arms. It depicted three black birds above a red and white plane. I did some research and found out that the three birds represented martlets.

Martlets, in that time, were thought to be mythical birds with no legs. Because they had no legs, they were always flying and could never land. Martlets symbolized a thirst for travel and adventure.

The martlet matches me perfectly. I've always wanted to travel. It's one of my dreams to join the Foreign Service and do humanitarian work all over the world. I don't want to just visit places as a tourist - I want to live there and experience the culutre like someone living in that country would. I want to see and experience as many things as possible.

I was accepted to the Beijing summer program and I am thrilled beyond words to have that chance. I've long had a fascination with Asian cultures and going to Beijing with JSA is a chance of a lifetime.
