Diplomacy in Turbulent Times

Turbulent times call for thoughtful responses and measured action. Join leading experts, passionate political actors, and the rising leaders of the Junior State of America under the Space Shuttle Endeavour for dinner, drinks, and a provocative conversation about the centrality of diplomacy in U.S. government and economic affairs.

Funds raised at the event support the Junior State of America and more than 11,000 high school students across the United States preparing to lead in a democratic society.

Ambassador John B. Emerson

John B. Emerson recently completed three and a half years as the United States Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany. Ambassador Emerson oversaw the operations and activities of the Embassy, five consulates and nearly 2,000 employees, and also coordinated with the U.S. military command in Germany. Prior to accepting his post, Ambassador Emerson was the president of private client services for Capital Group Companies. Ambassador Emerson also served on President Bill Clinton’s senior staff from 1993-1997. Before joining the Clinton Administration, Ambassador Emerson served as Chief Deputy City Attorney for the City of Los Angeles. He was active in civic, cultural, academic and foreign policy affairs prior to relocating to Berlin. Ambassador Emerson served as a director for a number of non-profit organizations, and also served as a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy and the Council on Foreign Relations. Originally from New York, Ambassador Emerson earned his undergraduate degree in government and philosophy from Hamilton College, and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Chicago. He is married to Kimberly Marteau Emerson, with whom he has three college-aged daughters.

Lynn Vavreck

Lynn Vavreck is a professor of political science and communication studies at UCLA and a contributing columnist to the Upshot at the New York Times. Her award-winning book, The Gamble, was described by Nate Silver as the “definitive account” of the 2012 election and political consultants on both sides of the aisle refer to her work on political messaging as “required reading.” In 2014, she hosted and interviewed Hillary Clinton at UCLA’s Luskin Lecture on Thought Leadership, and in 2015 she was awarded an Andrew F. Carnegie Fellowship to investigate the influence of political advertising. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, and she has served on the advisory boards of both the British and American National Election Studies. At UCLA she teaches courses on campaigns, elections, and public opinion. Lynn Vavreck holds a PhD in political science from the University of Rochester and held previous appointments at Princeton University, Dartmouth College and the White House. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she remains a loyal Browns fan and is a “known equestrian”—to draw on a phrase from the 2012 presidential campaign.

Since 1934, the Junior State of America (JSA) has helped over 500,000 students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be active, informed and responsible citizens, voters and leaders. With its student-led, student-run school-year model and rigorous summer school programs, JSA allows students to experience first-hand the drama and power of politics as well as the challenges and responsibilities of leadership. JSA chapters serve as the center of political awareness at their schools and JSA conventions bring thousands of students together to share opinions and learn from each other.
